Creating a Vertical Garden from Pallets

Creating a Vertical Garden from Pallets

We live on a park with a hill and there is an ugly 7 foot tall concrete wall between our house and our neighbours. Last year I got a bunch of pots and some flowers for the wall. This year the project got a lot bigger! Mark and I built this garden wall recently out of 6 used pallets found online.
  1. The pallets themselves were pretty ugly but Mark fixed the back of them so we would have good support. Then removed the front boards. You can use the original pallet front boards taking out every second one but I wanted a better quality wood in the front.
  2. We have been living with renovations for a couple of years now so we had these really great boards taken down from a ceiling. They were cut down in width and length to fit the pallet size.
  3. The boards and all sections of the pallets were painted so as to protect them from weather. I had some leftover paint in the basement so this determined the overall background colour. The other colours where $5 sample paints but a couple were $1 paint store rejects (my other paints are indoor paints so I needed exterior). At this time I used a background colour only. The front boards were painted on all sides but were loose from the structure.
  4. I attached a good quality landscape fabric to the backs of the boards leaving enough room for a pocket behind (around 4″ wide and deep).
  5. These boards were then attached with screws.
  6. A design was painted in light blue/green, purple and lime green. The boarder around the colours were simply tape and the colours were painted with a foam roller.
  7. Then we took the new and improved pallets to the wall – one by one as they are somewhat heavy and installed them.
  8. I have done some planting of flowers and also some of the pockets have seeds which includes flowers, strawberries, lettuce and spinach.

I’m pretty happy with the results and looking forward to see how the seed grow! Have a great day.
