San Francisco Solar PV and Wind powered home
We visited Robin last fall on our ECO tour and we were amazed at the extent of the green features in her home. The previous post is here: San Francisco Solar and Wind Powered Home.
Robin really has to be commended. She installed the first wind turbine in an urban setting. This was to her home in central San Francisco. That was a great feat in itself, but there are very few homes in the world that have as many green features as this home. She also took care to bring healthy and sustainable materials into the home and the lack of construction waste was an inspirational addition to the project. In fact she sorted and recycled 90% of the waste produced.

The short answer is that it depends…
There is no hard and fact rule for everyone. You might be able to get all of the electrity you need with additional turbines but this depends on where you live and other factors such as how much you use everyday.
Many times people combine a turbine with solar photovoltaics as the sun usually shines in the day and the wind blows at night. This is also usually more cost effective too. I did tour a home that was off grid and had a wind turbine as the only source of power but it was a great wind spot, the homeowner lived alone and he didn’t use much power.
The best way to go net zero is to lower your power needs first, then try to get what you need from a renewable source, in most cases this is more than one source.
In the case of the Robin’s San Francisco home, she reduced her power requirements first and had solar photovoltaic panels as well as the turbine.

They say 1 windmill produces almost half the energy needed to live in the house. If they were allowed to hook up say 3 of them.. Would that mean that this modern house wouldn’t need to pay for any electricity?
